C3D 2012 vs. C3D 2011

My company has not begun to upgrade to C3D 2012 from C3D 2011 yet. I am usually the first person to suggest an upgrade, but now work in a company where 50+ people use Civil 3D and I don't want to suggest using it unless I am sure it currently works properly. What are your thoughts on 2012? Is it better than 2011 and currently stable? Are there any show stopping bugs in it right now? Thanks.

I was wondering the same thing.  Don't want to stick my neck out without some reviews.

I've added a link to our list of new features for Civil 3D 2012. We've very excited about this release and the enhancements that we've added (and not just because we work for Autodesk).

Thanks for the reply Peter, I already have read about what 2012 can do and want to start using it. However, nothing against AutoDesk, but often the first time software is released and not just by AutoDesk there are bugs and some times those bugs are serious. That is what I want to know about.

I noticed that my original messages was called "C3D 2012 vs. C3D 2012" it should have been "C3D 2012 vs. C3D 2011" but I can't figure out how to edit it.

The stance at our company is we don't usually install new versions of CAD/Civil3D until at least after Service Pack 1.  I install the newest version right away and work with it and note any bugs that arise.  I will also pick 1 or 2 isolated users to be my guinea pigs as well.  But we have just over 40 users, so I know where you are coming from.

SP1 usually comes out about July/August and we do our upgrades over Labor Day weekend to minimize downtime.  That gives us basically 4 months to figure out if the version is a lemon (which, of course, Peter will tell you those don't exist! Smiley Wink).  This also gives us ways to figure out if we need to modify our standards and to plan in-house training before it even gets to the user's desk.

Unfortunately, there is no 100% way to guarantee that all of the bugs will be found by the time installation comes around, simply because of different user habits.  The best part is that with the new license manger allowing you to have multiple versions, you can now plan a more realistic transitional period if you choose.

My 2 cents...I, too, am curious to see what others think.

The software has been out only for a very short time.  Not enough time to generate any grievences, at least none that I've seen.  You're going to need to monitor this group and see, or ask again in a month or so.

So this is my third try. The recommended browser by cad is having problems. New IE.

I installed 2012 this morning and am promptly uninstalling and going back to 2011. Laggy to the point of unusable and its not because I don't have an adequate machine or new drivers or anything like that. 2012 was NOT ready for release.

Note the properties box has been laggy for a couple of releases due to slow retrieval of information, nothing new.

Ill try to post something more substantial when my blood pressure drops.

Have you submitted a support request with details about the nature of the lag or had your reseller or another non-partisan user test your data?  I have not experienced anything close to laggy to the point of unusable.

Matt

Thanks for the reply Matt. Coincidetly we've met while working over on Vancouver Isalnd. The site I am working on is 220ha so there is alot of info to push the limits. On smaller files created with C3D2011 it seemed ok, but when getting onto the larger files (surfaces and master planning) there was some failure. So here's what I did since my last post. I took the drawings that were originally created with c3d 2011 and a few from LDD2009 (that had been used for months in C3D 2011 without incident) and wblocked the entire drawing. Voila, the drawings are now smooth as silk. Dont know whats going on there but it has worked.

We have installed Civil 3D 2012. So far so good except some few OE problemsand normal installation issues when you do not read instructions! Looks stable for a start.

Peter:

Any chance of getting full BIM capability or water/gas main functionality built into the program soon?  The architects and building engineers seem to have much more complete tools available in Revit, and C3D doesn't seem to be approaching that any time soon.

I'm not Peter, but I will say that we can't talk publicly about any future release - however, your wish is a very well known feature request with our development team.

Hi guass2069, could you give us more details on the "few OE problems" and "normal installation issues?"

I have Internet Explorer IE9. I could not first download from subscriprion center. I used another computer with IE8. it worked. I also had to unistall norton 360 V5 off my laptop to make to install. When I installed C3D 2012, I re-installed norton 360 and IE9. IE9 still shows grayed out on my subscription download. With my norton installed, Reference manager did not work at all. I removed norton and all is working fine again. I am currently testing out the basics. Our dwt template has been update without a problem. Surfaces, points etc are working just fine. I have always installed C3D since 2005 and just run with it! We are happy AutoCAD Civil3D users despite our own pitfalls and some of the program known issues as it develops. We sticking with it though! These are some of the Operater Errors and standalone installation issues we got so far.

Check the Norton site. They may have a fix for that.

I was having similar issues with IE9. I have reverted back to Chrome when needed. However, I did install the beta flash support for IE64 bit and it does seem to be working better.

Note that Norton 360 4.0 didnt give me any issues.

Ah...a misundertanding.  I thought OE=Object Enabler.  Thanks for clearing that up.

Allen, Thanks. I had a chat with Norton. Norton was kicking AutoCAD programs big time. Now I am proted with the following solution: http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&ssfromlink=true&sprt_cid=f... Happy modelling!
