Broken references in Civil3d 2009

I am getting the Panorama dialogue box (or tool palette) coming up with a huge list of warnings. Each incidence has the following information in the event viewer:

Warning date time source (pipe networks) User Description: (with the followning on each line)

Drawing contains a broken reference – Source AeccDbNetwork ‘Line(s)_??_to_??’ could not be found in drawing Drive:\.......\~Civ3d\Data Shortcuts\Source Drawings\Pipe Networks\”drawing.dwg”.

Also I have lines that say "Reference surface '?????' not found in reference drawing"
and lines that say "Reference alignment '?????' not found in reference drawing"

where the ?? is either numbers for pipe works or names for alignments and surfaces.

The surfaces, alignments, and networks are still in the path named above so why are the coming up not found?

data shortcuts are a piece or crap.

here's something worse:

we have some drawings have data shortcuts in them, at one point we moved the source and adjusted the data shortcuts xml accordingly. then those files worked. but the thing is when you copy that drawing to anywhere not in the same folder it is currently in. then you try opening it again everything will be broken. then you have to browse one by one by hand. takes 20 minutes to fix each drawing.

so their programmers probably have a "very original xml path" and that gets triggered when the drawing path gets changed. lame feature. words can't describe the frustration with the software, we pay 10k a license and that's all we get are problems.

You edit the XML file directly? Have you not tried the Data Shortcuts
Editor?

yeah, of course. that's what normal user is doing. do you think vault prevent all these problems? then we will use it next time. i don't trust it because that thing is designed for revit or something. so basically different team programmed it in autodesk. that is trouble. like autocad and civil 3d aren't working together like they should.

we are still using 2009 and they are going to come up with 2011 already? maybe call it civil 3d vista or civil 3d 7,
