Best way to separate pipe network from ex topo file?

I have an existing topo file with points, surface, and existing pipe networks.  I want to separate it into two drawings... one with just the existing pipe networks and one with the existing linework, points, surface, etc.

What would be the best way to do this?

I would say data shortcut the pipes into a new file, then promote them to that file. Then delete them from the original.

Otherwise, save as Pipe Network.dwg, and delete everything but the pipes. And in the existing ground file, delete the pipes.

D-reffing and promoting worked.

I had tried saving the existing topo as a new file then deleting stuff, but I couldn't get rid of the surface.  Promoting in a new file allowed me to delete the surface that was still dragged along, then I D-ref'd the surface and it came in fine and even automatically associated with the pipe network.
