3D Faces as Definition on surface

I am trying to define my surface with two 3D Faces and it looks like the surface does not acept this definition. Even that they show up in the definition tab, they do not show up in my object viewer when I pick up the surface -see first screen shot in Word document-

The objects are display in the second shot in word document when I pick up my drawing objects. If it is not the best way to define my ramp, how is possible to define it then?

Thanks in advance

Can you post a png screen shot? Word doc's scare me. 😮

I've never tried using 3d faces to build a surface, so I can't tell you about that. But, you could model that ramp real quick and easy with a couple of feature lines.

First convert your 3DFACEs to 3D LINEs - see e.g.:

Thanks for the link Rafael. I'll try it sometime myself. Wouldn't just exploding the 3d faces result in 3d lines though? I don't have something handy to try it out so I'm not sure.

I'll second this request. Some of us don't like the word that creates docx's.

Hi Rafael,

Did you use the attached form to add the 3DFaces to your surface model?

If you did and never saw any errors, then all that has happened is that
your surface display is set not to display the triangles.

Right mouse click on the surface in the Prospector and select "Edit
Surface Style". That way you can adjust the object visibility so you
can see any components of the surface you wish.

To Keith,

There is nothing wrong with using 3DFaes to build a surface model. As a
design tool drawing 3Dfaces is probably harder than drawing feature
lines. Editing 3DFaces certainly is harder.

To Vladimir & Keith,

Unless you are using Land Desktop which couldn't use 3DFaces as part of
a surface model definition, why would you want to convert the 3DFaces to
lines?
3DFaces are amongst the best source data for building a surface model if
you toggle the "Maintain Edges from Objects" on.

There are two issues with the conversion.

You can't explode 3DFaces to lines without first converting the 3DFaces
to Regions, then exploding the regions.
After exploding the Regions from a set of 3DFaces you then have
duplicate lines which have to be cleared up with Map before adding to
the surface.

Hi,

Oops, forget the screen grab.

Thanks Laurie,

I forgot the toggle for 3d faces was there. I've never used it, but I remember seeing before. If I come across the need for it, I'll use it. I have yet to see data from someone come to me as 3d faces though. I've gone the other way around myself-creating 3d faces from a surface-for rendering purposes. I'm sure it will come in handy someday.

Hi Keith,

In Australia where there is a large number of Civil Engineering programs
with propriety binary surface models, export of 3DFaces from these
programs would be the normal means of sending the surface model to
Softdesk/Land Desktop/Civil 3D. Hence we are very familiar with the
issues involved.

When I was with CADApps I wrote Tech papers on the processes and and
also programmed some tools to help with data transfer.
