'07 install issues

This topic may be more appropriate in another group, but I will start it here. I have just installed C3D 2007 to my XP64 system. I found that there are several path errors in my support file directories which I was able to fix, but when I start the program I get a series of errors, listed below and none of the Civil3D commands work. I am assuming that this problem is related to the fact that XP64 uses a different install path than the standard XP Pro.

Has anyone else installed to XP64?

from a previous thread (search for "x64"). not sure what any of it means, but here it is:

Officially Windows XP 64-bit is not supported for Civil 3D. When it
will be supported depends on when AutoCAD supports it.

For now, this is what you can do:

[DISCLAIMER: this is unsupported - you are on your own for troubleshooting]

1. As has been mentioned install .NET Framework 2.0 prior to installing
Civil 3D. I'm not sure if .NET Framework 1.1 is also available for
WinXP 64-bit, but that may work also.

2. Instead of running the C3D installer .exe file, look in the
Bin/Installer directly and run the c3d.msi file directly.

Let us know how you get on.

If I'm not mistaken, I posted the quoted reply for C3D 2005; I don't
even know if the same procedure would work for C3D 2006 or C3D 2007. It
would be nice to hear back from someone who tries it out.

sorry about that himanshu, i didn't even look at the version info. i didn't mean to put you on the line like that.

Himanshu, I didn't see your post either - which is probably a good thing because I have been running C3D'06 on this computer for four months now without any problems.

I already have both .NET framework 1.1 and 2.0 from the Windows Update website, and I was able to install the program normally from the installer .exe file. The first significant problem that I ran into is that the Hardware Certification Database doesn't list XP64 as an operating system, so the Performance Tuner doesn't work properly and ignores my FX1400 video card. It works fine with '06. The second problem was the .arx files that I listed earlier. I intend to try a clean uninstall then reinstall, which appears to have helped others and I will update this thread when I have more information.

No worries -- I just wanted to clarify.

"this computer" meaning a WinXP 64-bit? That's good...so you're saying
C3D 2006 works on WinXP 64-bit, but C3D 2007 doesn't.

The graphics card issue isn't that big a deal. First you could check
Autodesk's web site for an updated XML file that contains newer graphics
card info used by the performance tuner. If it's still not supported,
just go in an change the settings manually for options that you know
that the FX1400 can support.

This is the bigger issue and it would be nice to hear back about your
experiences. Microsoft's web site may be a good source of information
on installing 32-bit programs on the 64-bit OS and other compatibility
issues (install location, registry entries, etc.) Some resources:

1. WinXP 64-bit:
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=ph;en-us;8599

2. Overview of the compatibility considerations:

3. Running 32-bit Applications:

Himanashu, it's been quite a while since I had time to follow up on this but here's the update.

That's exactly what I am saying. I went through the process that you recommended. I uninstalled all Autodesk software and removed that registry entries, before installing C3D'07. The basic functions of ACad all work fine, but none of the Civil3d commands work either from the menus or toolbars. They all report "unknown command" errors.

Unfortunately the FX1400 is already listed in the XML file, but my OS is not. When I go into the manual performance tuning options, the hardware acceleration box is grayed out and I can't change anything significantly.

*** MORE FOLLOWUP ***

I did some more experimenting and found that I can manually load most of the arx files that do not load automatically on startup. I have added my command line output below to show what happened. I still don't have full functionality but I can do some things. I just discovered that none of the subassemblies on my tool palette seem to work, although all of the other tool palette buttons for blocks, hatches, text etc work fine.

Thanks for the information - I'm sure this will help others who are also
trying to get C3D running on a 64-bit OS. I'm sure this isn't as
convenient, but have you considered a dual-boot setup so that you can
boot in 32-bit and 64-bit mode on that system?

I thought about it when I first got the computer, but when C3D'06 worked fine I didn't worry about it. So far all of the issues that have come up seem to be fixable or at least have a workaround, so I am going to carry on for now. Hopefully when Vista comes out Autodesk will start to move a little faster on the 64 bit compatability issue.

I noted earlier that most of my problems seem to be related to search paths, and the fact that I have to install to C:\Program Files (x86)\Autodesk....... I seem to recall that there was a similar problem with the early versions of Land Desktop. If the program wasn't installed to the standard directory then you had problems. Does anyone else remember this, and what was the fix?

did you ever resolve this problem?

No, I eventually gave up on it and installed XP Pro so that I could get some work done. I spoke to Nick Zeeben at AU about this and he told me that someone has worked out the solution, and apparently posted it somewhere. Supposedly you have to manually load .NET and do some other things but I don't have any details.
I understand that the next update may be 64 bit compatible. Check the MyFeedback site for details.
