aca 08 and 64 bit

Has anyone had any issues with aca 08 installed on a 64 bit operating system? I understand that in order to install the software on a 64 bit system, you'll need to apply a workaround since this was not designed to run on 64 bit. But before I purchase a new laptop with xp x64 I want to make sure I won't have issues with crashes, stalls, etc.
Thank You,
Phil
P.S. I have been told by Autodesk support that I may be unable toget any support for the software if installed on 64 bit. That's a little concerning.

If you want the support, 32bit OS is what you buy.
If you feel like going it alone, 64bit is one choice of many. Then there is
the little dirty secret of lack of printer/plotter drivers in 64bit for many
established hardware in most offices too, so cover all your software and
hardware, not just AutoCAD.

High end laptop/PC specs along with VISTA will more than compensate for any
perceived 64bit need advantage for the average user. You provide no details.

My reasoning for needing 64 bit is to accomodate 4g of ram. I would like to get into some rendering and am an extensive photoshop user. I don't want any limitations with any of the above but am really starting to wonder if it's all worth it.

I have XP 64. I installed using Orca. I have the files from Autodesk to
install on 64 bit now. Once I've gone 64 bit I'll never go back. I have no
problems with ACA now. My HP 500 works fine as well. I have had a couple of
crashes, but every AutoCAD product I have had since R14 has crashed even
more.

I was notified Autodesk is working on a true 64 bit support. See below.

Dear Tom,

Attached you will find the files necessary to install your product in
a 64 bit environment.
Please follow the below installation instructions:

1.. Install the latest .NET Framework (64 bit) from Microsoft on the
destination workstations.
2.. Copy the contents of the installation DVD to a local drive or
network location.
3.. In the main install folder, rename the original MEP.msi and
setup.ini files to preserve them.
4.. Copy the provided replacement MEP.msi and Setup.ini files into
the main install folder.
5.. Run the installation/deployment procedure as normal.

Our development team is working on a true 64 bit application but
cannot provide any further details at this time.

Please let me know if you have any questions about this information
and I will be happy to address them.

Best Regards,

Kathryn Poulos

You need Windows Vista, 32bit, visit any search engine and review that OS.

I use CS3 almost as much as Acad. I edit and print images for some pro
photograhers as well as my own. I have 4 GB of RAM and a NVIDIA Quadro FZ
1500 with Intel Core 2 quad CPU.

Dean,
I was told by a dell sales rep to stay away from vista as it is "not known to be cad friendly". I have read numerous other writings since, backing up that statement. In reading Tom's post on xp64, that's just what I wanted to hear and I think that's the direction I'm heading. I, too, was informed by autodesk support that they are currently working on developement of 64 bit compatible aca. No details were given.Thank You for your contributions and I welcome any more input on the subject.

I have it running on XP64 (stayed away from Vista).
There are a few memory management issues when rendering, along with the usual lack of drivers. If you cancel a render half-way through, it won't release the used RAM, so you eventually run out.
Adesk also are not certifying (testing) 64bit drivers for graphics cards that I have seen.
Apart from that it seems to work OK, but if you're serious about rendering, why are you buying a laptop?

Works fine with both Vista 32bit and XPsp2, real world, and I don't care for
anything a Dell salesman recommends. My issues with Vista are as a clunky
overly cumbersome OS, not as a base for ACA2008, which seems oblivious to
what it's sitting in... .
I am also not a fan of "making things work", mostly they just don't perform
at a pace that's worth the investment. But others get excited about
squeezing an extra unperceived click out of things, so have at it.

There are other parts of your system that are even more important than RAM
and OS, don't skimp on any of it. I seriously recommend to browse through
the hardware discussion area for tips and ideas, if you post there give an
indication of what kind of rendering you plan on doing.

And, if rendering is a big part of your daily workload, consider actually
having a rendering-only machine separate from your 'regular' PC, I assume
you don't take the day off while you wait for a rendered scene, correct? It
would be a better investment IMHO.

Oh, and no offense meant, but you are buying a laptop: not built for speed
regardless of OS.

DELL M90 is a good laptop with power, heavy but powerful. When looking at
powerful laptops you need to be ready to open your wallet.

This may be a little optomistic, but I'm expecting Adesk to produce a 64bit version of ACA soon (hopefully next release).
