Rendering halts and turns black

Hello,
Recently upgraded from 2011 to 2012. When I render at a resolution higher than 1024x768 my rendering stops between 80% and 90% and leaves me with a black image with a blue sphere in the bottom left corner.
The quality of the render (draft to presentation) doesn't matter. The amount of lights, whether the sun is on or off, sky on or off, also make no difference, and this never happened with 2011 using the same computer.
Attached are the finished renderings - 3000x2250 first, 1024x768 second.
Here are my system specs
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66ghz
Ram 8gig
64bit windows 7 OS
Nvidia GeForce 9400 256mb
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yes! The solution is to set the memory limit higher in the render preferences dialog. From Draft to Presentation the memory limit is always set at 1048. I started setting it at 4000 and had no problems anymore.

Ah thats good so hopefully the render I'm waiting on now won't crash. Took me ages to find the memory limit, as it is missing off the bottom of the palette in windows 7.
Interestingly enough, my computer has 24GB of RAM so i tried setting it to use 20GB and which froze when was about to start the Final Gather. Knocked it back to 10GB which had issues and now it seems to work set to 8GB
