multileader block causing corruption

i pulled in a standard keynote (square) and redefined the block to match a block that we had been given. after doing so, i started having to recover the file in order to open it. it saves fine but opening is always a problem. after copying the new multileader to another drawing yesterday and getting the same problem i realized that it had something to do with the multileader. via trial and error i've found that it's not the block that is the problem. it's when i select a custom block for the multileader. i've stripped the drawing down to the block and one multileader definition. with the custom block selected i get the error on open - if i have a default source block (hexagon, circle, box, etc.) and save it opens just fine. any help would be greatly appreciated.
