Sorry, I presumed as it was in the AutoCAD Architecture that you'd assume thats what i was using.

It'll be for AutoCAD Architecture 2009 & also 3D Studio Max Design (prob 2010). The main focus of my work will be with AutoCAD in 2D, but around 30% will be on 3D Studio. So the 3D forms a decent chuck of what i need. The machine will render the results of my 3D Studio work & there will be a small amount of photoshop work happening.

Other than that, there will be the general office products but that shouldnt affect the spec.

Hope this helps

What are the prices you are getting for these?

Both machines are almost identical except for the video card. The Quadro FX 1700
is fairly old, the FX 1800 is actually a much better card.

Personally, I would up it to the i7-860, which is my current personal fav CPU.

Thanks Matt,

I have to work within a budget for the new workstation, and the 1st option is half the cost of the 2nd!!!

What are your views on the Quadro NVIDIA FX580 graphics card, is this an ok card (if you have any 🙂 )?

What is your budget?

It's very weird that the graphics card is causing the second machine to be
double the price. An FX 1700 is only $500 and the FX 1800 is $450.

I didn't really understand the 580 all that well, but found this today:
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/quadrofx-firepro.html

It turns out the FX 580 is a VERY good card, but it depends on the application.
In Max, the 580 is either very close or beats the FX 1800, which is based on an
older GPU. In AutoCAD the 580 is anwhere from 65-95% as fast as the FX 1800,
depending on 3D operation.

Thanks again Matt,

My budget is £1000. The Dell workstation is coming in at around £850 with the other option coming from our current IT supplier who is charging £1550.

It seems like it makes sense for me to go with the Dell option.
