Irregular column shape

I'm trying to create a column as in the attached drawing. Trying to use column-> apply properties to linework, does not work as a column. How does this command work so as to create the attached irregular shaped column. Thanks for the help.

1) Use pedit to convert the outline to a polyline.
2) Use membershape to add the new structural shape and use the "create
style" button to convert the shape to a member style.
3) Then use columnadd to add the column.

Hi,

In addition to Doug's suggestion, if you are using AutoCAD Architecture 2010 with productivity extension (or later version), there is a 'Custom Column' button available at Tool Palette (or Ribbon ->Home tab -> Pick the arrow next to Enhanced Custom Grid and look at the drop down menu) which provides an alternative way to create an irregular column by picking the polylines directly in the drawing.

Thanks,
Sam
