Grips for layer control

This sounds like a dumb question, but here it goes.  I recently had a fatal error on ACA 2013 and now it won't let me use grips to change an objects layer, color or linetype from the toolbar.  I have to use the properties pallette which really slows down my production.  How do I get that functionality back?  I also don't recall what error code it spit out at me.

NEVERMIND

I figured it out.  The error had reset my pickfirst setting to 0 which was screwing all kinds of stuff up.  All is well now though.
