Autosnap help!!

Hi, i have been having some problems with any object or polyline that i draw snapping onto a single line. E.g if i draw a polyline it will only let me draw it horizontally even without ortho mode switched off and then when i click to insert a new start point it will only start from the line that i have currently drawn. This has become very frustrating, especially as i am a student and my deadline is less than a week away. If you could help by breaking it down step by step as im new to autocad. My version is 2009 autocad architecture.
Many thanks

More info would help as this really doesn't make much sense. Are you working with Polar Tracking on? OTrack? Onap? Are you saying you can not draw a vertical line? Have you hit the esc key after previous line so as to no continue the line you originally drew? One good concrete example would be most helpful.

This reply is probably too late, but I suspect that you're not really
looking at your drawing in plan view. Polylines are limited in space to the
current xy plane regardless of your view direction. Do you have your
UCSicon showing and if so, does it show the funny right angle arrows or
something else?

Type: Plan (Enter) then World (Enter)
That will set your UCS back to World (usually what you want for 2d drawing)
