ADT: "Killing me softly "

Changing the name didn't help either...

Pedro, add ADT to the mix and it changes the results drastically when you
then add ACA and ADT together.
Boy do you go searching for bad news?

Hi Nathan

No, I don't search for bad news. They come to me everyday, specially form
Autodesk and Autodesk dealers, telling me that ADT has no future. I guess
that we must admit that this is battle is lost. I did invest a lot in
AutoArchitect S8, ADT, VIZ and VIZ Render. Three are gone. ADT will follow
them soon.

if you want to feel better, search for AutoCAD and Revit... (revit is
just a teeeny tiny line at the bottom) 😉

Sooooooooo tired and worn out that it is pitiful to continue further lame discussion on this topic. AutoCAD, ACA and Revit are going nowhere anytime soon. If one is so inclined to feel the production line they are on is over then move to another brand but why keep beating yourself and others day after day, week after week on something you have no control over.

You have control over your choice. Choose one and go about your business. I knew an old farmer back in the days that saw his crops come and go with the seasons and he told me "If you don't have something good to say then say nothing at all" 🙂

Everybody here knows the challanges and limitations of both platforms (ACA & Revit) and I like to think those same people know the difference between actual solutions for the end user and "smoke and mirror" shows just to make a sale.

Hi Jay

You are right and I understand your point of view. The question is: I have
no choice! I tried to learn Revit but I gave up because it's very complex,
has many limitations and that thing doesn't make any sense to me. Meanwhile,
I've decided to upgrade from to ACA 2008 to 2009, but it crashes all the
time. I am on "subscription", but the Support Team doesn't find solution to
my problems. I'm afraid I have to go back to AutoCAD because all the other
Autodesk products have en ephemeral life.

Pedro,

I gotcha. Tell you what, start posting your ACA questions on the following discussion group and I will ensure my Application Engineer teams review, respond and help point you in the right direction. Post in the AutoCAD Architecture and VisionREZ Plug In groups and make a brief note that you are only using ACA and list what platform / version:

http://www.visionrez.com/forms.htm

We feel much the same as you and have lots of exprience on ACA back to it's first release so we would be glad to help pick up where anybody else is falling off.

And going back to AutoCAD is not a horrible idea either but I feel that with the right instructions, guidance and skills that the BIM capabilities of ACA hold infinite amounts of more potential than 2D "flat only" drawing.

Thanks
Jay

THE GRAPHS ARE MEANINGLESS!! If you will notice the ACA represented in the graph has nothing if anything to do with CAD. It's A(*^&%@ C*(&%^& Association and the numbers above the line represent links to the left so pay only attention to the dwindling #s of ACA.

Technically, you are right. If you do a search on google just for "revit" you see that the Revit we know as architecturally related software is not the only product in the world called Revit. And the same thing goes if you google "ACA" So the stats for the reporting would be skewed incorrectly due to these factors

However, there is some interesting stats that can be drawn when considering it all from a 10,000 foot high perspective and searching by the actual product names (not acronyms):

1. No matter what stat search you run "AutoCAD" alone is the dominating 800 lb Gorilla dancing around in the center of the ring.
2. To get some better stats ran a search of: AutoCAD Architecture, Architectural Desktop, Autodesk Revit (to try and weed out non-Autodesk Revit software searches and found the following:
http://www.google.com/trends?q=autocad+architecture%2C+architectural+desktop%2C+autodesk+revit&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all&sort=0
3. If the preceding stats were true (within a small + / - factor) then it would show that ACA and Revit are very, very close in regard to google search stats.
4. But the thing I find most interesting is that no matter which way you "stat it" searches for those three product lines don't even show the USA in the Top 10! That I find to be very interesting. I would have assumed USA google stats for those lines to be within the Top 1-3 placements. But Algeria and Greece lead that charge. Viva, Algeria and Greece! 🙂
5. Further breakdown of that same search request just for the USA (all years) shows ACA and Revit to be virtually even:
http://www.google.com/trends?q=autocad+architecture%2C+architectural+desktop%2C+autodesk+revit&ctab=0&geo=US&date=all&sort=0

And again shows to ring true for the USA in the last 12 months:
http://www.google.com/trends?q=autocad+architecture%2C+architectural+desktop%2C+autodesk+revit&ctab=-1&geo=US&geor=all&date=ytd

So what should a user take from this? Really not much at all. This is more the playground for marketers. But I appreciate that Pedro posted because if all things are equal then the reports actually show Revit and ACA both have a very healthy search stats on google.com

So in the end it would appear that this stat reporting mechanism would refute the post title of "Killing Me Softly" with something much more positive for us all to pull from.

Pura Vida my friends!

Jay,

In Portuguese, "Pura Vida" means "Pure Life". I suppose the Spanish write it
in the same way, but the accent is completely . Anyway, I presume you mean
"Real life" , so the translation should be "Vida real". Thanks for the
effort.

As you may understand, I love ADT and I don't want to change. The question
is: it's very annoying to receive emails from dealers, almost everyday,
telling me to move to Revit.
In the near future I'm going to concentrate myself in my Architectural
projects and dedicate less time to my drawing tools.
Meanwhile, I will accept you invitation to share my problems ACA2009 with
VizonREZ experts, hopping they find the solution.

Pedro,

Actually I mean it as you understand it in Portuguese. I have a friend in Cozumel that is from Argentina and he always said it to me when we parted ways. This young man had close to nothing but I was always intrigued by his upbeat attitude and outlook to life. Hence, I like to pass it along when I get a chance 🙂

I hear you on the contact annoyance but why worry? That is the job of salespersons to hound you to a sale. But in the end you always retain the "choice" to take them up on their offer, move along about your business and not take them up on their offer or let their rhetoric become a mind numbing, sharp pain in the back of your head that will not go away.

Every day I get hammered with emails, ads, and calls from all sorts of products to go here or go there. Mercedes wants me to upgrade to the latest E Class but I like my older ride even though they quite making it years ago. Its part of the joy and sorrow of living in a "hyper" connected age. We are always going to feel pressured to go here or go there but is where we are now really the better choice for me at that time?

Anyway, always good chatting with you and hopefully we will get to formally meet sometime in the future and look back on all of this and laugh 🙂

Pura Vida,
Jay

Pedro,
I don't know if you have any other choices in terms of resellers in your
area, but here in Northern California we have a handful to choose from,
and ended up going with the one who doesn't try to sell to us. It
became extremely annoying to have to hear a sales pitch when all I
needed was an answer, and 15-minute phone calls lasted over an hour. My
advice to you is to unsubscribe from those emails, and don't take their
calls. Really. It's not worth your health. Well, at least I had to
decide that it wasn't worth mine. Stress and worry are worse for you
than almost anything else. Also, I don't think that ignoring the
resellers would be considered "putting your head in the sand" because I
have to believe that if Adesk ever decides to no longer make ACA and
move us all to Revit, they are going to have to make it a lot easier on
us than it is now. Afterall, if I'm going to have to learn a new
program, why not switch to one that will cost a fraction of the price?

Pedro,

The next time a dealer calls you, ask them to make some doors and windows
with multiple mutin grid patterns. Give him some odd ones. After he spends
several hours, show him how quickly it can be done with ACA.

Lets not get into another "This product can do this one particular function
faster than the other" battle. Feature-by-feature comparisons of any
software are worthless. It's about the entire package and what one can do
with it.
