2 realy simple formula problem

I am trying to get a structural schedule to show the length of the beam less
1"
Every time I add a formula to the schedule it comes in just feet. I have
changed
the data format to length - long and the sample format is length long. I all
I have done is inserted the
structural length into the formula area. I have the structural length
showing in a non-formula
column and it shows feet and inches just fine.

I have not done a formula before can I just insert the structural length - 1
and get the answer I need?
