turn off snap to certain layers?

I often draw over topography lines and use them for reference but I don't want to snap to them. Is there any way to view an object and turn off snapping only for that specific object or layer? For instance, can you make frozen layers visible somehow so they can be viewed, but not snapped to? Or is there another way to accomplish this?

Yes you can, draw them with layer DEFPOINTS and then turn OFF layer Zero

Thanks. I experimented with this and it works great with new linework drawn on layer Defpoints. However, it doesn't seem to work if you put an x-ref on layer Defpoints. Is there any way to get the same result with an x-ref?

Nope, it only works with entities drawn on defpoints layer.

You can also try to publish your no-snap geometry to a DWF file and attach it as a DWF underlay (xref). DWFOSNAP then controls snapping to this DWF file. See:
