After reading all this I can't help wonder about a couple of things:

1.  What is the title of this class?  What subject(s) are being taught?  and,

2.  What is the purpose and/or value to the student for creating an AutoCAD drawing of something if the class isn't a drafting class?

I would second the call for the instructor to join in this discussion and explain what s/he thinks s/he's doing.
