i am looking for command that when active causes text to mask line below it.tried text to front but doesnt work

There's a background masking option checkmark for MTEXT (it's in the Text panel of the Properties palette).

 

For regular TEXT, type TEXTMASK to apply.

Use the command TXT2MTXT and convert Dtext to Mtext. Once you start using the "Background Masking" of Mtext, you can always select similar and bring to front on your text and the thought of trimming lines for text soon diminishes.
