Viewport Formatting Resets With Xref Update

Hello,

I'm working with a drawing which contains an xref. I've done some formatting in the drawing viewport to change the color appearance, and display of layers in the xref. However, when I open the xref to make any updates the drawing it's being referenced in completely reverts to how the xref was last saved and discards all my viewport formatting. I imagine I'm overlooking a setting to solve this but have yet to discover it. I'm running Autocad civil 3d 2014, and haven't experienced this with the last 4 consecutive releases. Any ideas? Thanks.

Set VISRETAIN to 1
