Hello,
I am using AutoCAD 2013.
New to solid modeling and having difficulty understanding the UCS. I have been cycling thru the options until find one that works for a particular plane. However, would like to understnad the madness so can work with the UCS efficiently. So is the "Z" axis supposed to be perpendicular to the plane working in or is there some trick to knowing which UCS I should be using?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

In general - you should only be working on the XY plane.
So your goal is setting XY plane with UCS. Z gives you an in/out (+/-) direction, but don't worry too much about it, if something goes the wrong direction simply undo and change to -
Once you get the hang of setting the XY plane, all will start to make sense.
