Slow ODBC connection

Hi,

I am using Autocad 2013 map 3d on a number of projects. They all have vector mapping with them around the size of 60Mb which takes up most of the drawing. When I connect the main shape file in the drawing to an access database using an ODBC connection the join can take around 7 mins to connect. Editing the shape file is also very slow. I have since overlayed the mapping as an xref reducing the drawing size considerably and the connection to the ODBC now takes about 10 seconds.

I am happy with this, but having spoke to Autodesk and another AutoCAD specialist who insisted the mapping would not be the problem and would not affect the ODBC connection (which is why I did not try this solution for months) I am concerned that there is still an underlying problem.

Is the drawing size the route of the problem?
