Preview Issues when Drawing Lines

I have three users (so far) with the same problem in AutoCAD 2015.  While drawing lines in a view other than Top, the lines do not preview at the location they are actually being drawn.

I initially mistook this for a Dragmode issue, but it is not.  The line is previewing, it just previews at the wrong location (which may be off the screen in some cases).  It seems to be previewing on the XY plane, regardless of where it is actually drawn, then appearing correctly after the second point is clicked.

These users seem to get the error when opening existing drawings, but not when starting new ones.  However, opening the same drawings on other computers does not show the same issue.

The issue affects Lines, but Polylines and Circles preview as expected.

Any suggestions as to what may be causing this?  I've never seen this issue, and my poking around for solutions online just turned up a bunch of cases where Dragmode was the answer.  I'm primarily an Inventor user, so I'm sure there are many arcane settings in AutoCAD that I'm not aware of.

LINE is a 2D object that stays on the plane/UCS you have until you click the second point elsewhere: could that be the problem?

Or help us recreate it by providing parameters (or a DWG file with notes).

There was a picture that was supposed to post with this that didn't go through.  Maybe it will clear things up a bit.

The line draws correctly.  It previews in the wrong location between the first and second click.

Based on comments made in this thread:

http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/AutoCAD-2013-2014-2015/2015-UCS-Issue/m-p/4946858

I did some additional testing. As it turns out, the problem seems to be Dynamic Input. The three users that have reported the problem so far all work with Dynamic Input turned off. I had previously been unable to replicate the problem on my own computer because I work with it turned on.

  • We are working in AutoCAD Mechanical, but I verified that vanilla does the same thing.
  • My statement in the original post that new drawings do not exhibit the behavior is incorrect. We made errors in testing it because our template file opens up looking at the Top view, which masks the problem because you are drawing on the XY plane.
  • I have confirmed that 2013 did not have the issue. We do not have any machines with 2014, so I can't test it.
  • 2015 exhibits the behavior whether or not SP1 is installed.

So, it seems that sometime between the 2013 and 2015 releases, Autodesk somehow broke the Dynamic Input setting for any coordinate system other than the WCS.

If DYNMODE on is not an option, then bBe sure to report this bug to Autodesk, posting around here is not enough:

If you are a subscription user, you can report through the Subscription Center as well (as in do it twice).

Have done so - apparantly it's a known issue to them, for which they are already working on a fix.

Unfortunately, the workaround of turning on the Dynamic Input isn't a great one in this case.  At least two of these users had it turned off because drawing becomes very laggy when it is turned on (just one of the numerous graphics issues we've been fighting with since upgrading, with machines that all ran 2013 just fine).

If we must have Dynamic Input turned on to avoid the incorrect previewing of lines, do you have any suggestions as to how to fix the lag that turning the setting on introduces on these machines?

You are correct, this described behavior is a known issue and our Development Team are currently looking at a resolution.  With regards to your graphics issues, I have a few suggestions to try.

- Verify that you are using the latest Autodesk certified driver for your graphics card.  You can use the following link (Autodesk - Certified Hardware)

- If your graphics card is not listed on this page, I would then suggest updating your driver to the latest version according to the developer's website.  Then I would suggest turning off the Hardware Acceleration.  This can be done by:

- For AutoCAD 2015: Type GRAPHICSCONFIG into the command line and press Enter.  In the dialog box, you can disable Hardware Acceleration

- For AutoCAD 2014 and prior: Type 3DCONFIG into the command line and press Enter.  In the “Adaptive Degradation and Performance Tuning” dialog box, click “Manual Tune”.  Then in the “Manual Performance Tuning” dialog box, check / uncheck the box next to “Enable hardware acceleration”

If the above resolves your inquiry, please check "Accept as Solution".

Steve,

Sorry it took so long for me to post back about this - I've been buried on a a project, and the user that I was wanting to use as the test subject has been out of town a lot recently.

I did not check the machines of every user involved, but they are likely similar.  The graphics card for the one that I did check is an AMD Firepro M5950.  I did not see this (or any other M-series card) on your Certified Hardware list.  Since I'm not an administrator on any of these machines, I will have to put in a request with our IT department to make sure the driver is up to date.

All of our users with this problem (and most of our users that have any AutoCAD 2015 problems at all) are laptop users.  Most, if not all, of these users already run with their Hardware Acceleration turned off.

I'm not really up to speed on what graphics cards we should be using (since I have very little control over hardware), especially on laptops.  Are there known issues with this card and AutoCAD 2015?
