Linetype in Xref

I created a base file and xref'ed the file in to a sheet file.

The linetype in the base file is a dashed line but shows up as a centerline in the sheet file.

When I try to "edit the reference in place" in the sheet file the linetype shows up properly, but then reverts back to the (incorrect) "centerline" when I save the xref in place.

I've checked all the layer linetypes in the sheet file; they are set properly.

I've checked the visretain settings.

I've detached and re-attached.

The dashed line shows up properly in all the other files that it is xref'ed in to, so I'm assuming it's a setting in this particular sheet file. Either that or a corrupt file?

I cannot figure out what is going on.

In the sheet file, is the linetype of the xref layer something like "base|dashed"?
Or has it been assigned a linetype in the sheet file?

If nothing else, strip down the base drawing to just one entity on the messed up layer and strip down the sheet drawing, then post both drawings.
