Some times when I open a drawing the drawing name is changed to "drawing2" or 3 etc. Why does this happen?
Naming a drawing will end this string of 1's and 2's but as long as you QNEW or otherwise start a new drawing file and you have not closed a particular session of AutoCAD the anonymous number will continue; 5, 6, 7...

AutoCAD has not changed the way it uses drawing1, drawing2 etc. When working properly the only time you should see those names is when you create a new drawing from scratch or a template. The new drawing will be named drawing1 temporarily until you save it and give it a name. If you are seeing drawing1 being applied to a qsave, then AutoCAD is not functioning properly. You might want to try the program Reset Settings to Default located with AutoCAD under all programs. Or if that doesn't do it you may want to go to control panel, programs and features select AutoCAD and pick uninstall then select the repair option.
So you go to My Docs and open the file: Thompson's Drawing for example
AutoCAD shows in the Windows header and on the Workspace tab: Drawing1
You do not see the file name (Thompson's Drawing) in your workspace?

New works as it does for any Windows based Program now; the Command creates a new instance from the Template file with the common extension for the program type: DWT = DWG, (Excel)XLT = XLS, (Word)DOT=DOC
This way the Template file remains unedited and is the same each time it is opened.
The only easy way I have found to open a Template is to Right click the file name and choose Open. Otherwise even in Windows Explorer if you Dbl click the Template File name you will get a common extension file for that program. Right click the Template and you will see the option New is bolded indicating that you are going to get a new file and not the Template if you Dbl click on that file name.
NEW and QNEW are core Commands in AutoCAD. Both will take you to the Template window if the STARTUP Variable is set to 0.
If you wish to use a Drawing file to create a new Template you need to change the extension to DWT from the Files of type selection at the bottom of the Save window when you SAVEAS

When I picked the NEW icon it did default to DWT files. I changed the file type to DWG in the box at the very bottom and picked a drawing then the next time I selected NEW it then did default to DWG files. So if you pick NEW and change the file type back to DWT and select one it should change the dafault back to DWT.
STARTUP to 0 should give you the Template choices.
OPTIONS, Files tab, Template Setting, Default Template File Location.
Where does this point to? It should be your Template Folder in Windows.
