Extract data Error

Civil 3D 2012

Windows 7.

My goal is to create an Excel Directory with the info provided in Step 1 for all the drawings in Folder A (Select folder in Step 6). When the procedure failed I shortened it to check with only the current drawing, but failed too.

Am I doing someting wrong or is it a bug?

Error message: Some of the drawing files referenced by the data extraction could not be found.

I don't get how it can't find the drawings that were selected from the ones the Wizard provided for.

This is what I did.

1.- Added some names and value info for my drawing in File>>Drawing Properties>>Custom Tab>>Add.

2.- Saved the file on Folder A of a USB connected external hard disk.

3.- Ribbon>>Insert Tab>>Extract Data.

4.- Page 1 of  8 of Wizard dialog.>> Select Create a new data extraction>> Next.

5.- Windows' File Dialog Window appears: Save as Directorio de planos.dxe in same folder as the drawing. Next.

6.- Page 2 of Wizard.>> Select Drawing/Sheet set.  Select Include Current Drawing. Next.

7.- Page 3 of Wizard.>> Window with a list of objects in the drawing. Nothing seems to be related with what I added in step 1. Leave all objects in list Selected or Unselected as they appear.

         >>Leave Display all object types Selected.

         >>Leave Display blocks with attributes only Unselected.

         >>Leave Display objects currently in use only Unselected.  >>Next.

8.- Page 4 of Wizard.>> Window with a list of properties of the selected (step 7) objects and step 1 data. >>Unselect properties not related to step 1 data.>>Next.

9.- Warning window appears with "Some of the drawing files referenced by the data extraction could not be found. What do you want to do? message. >> Select Continue updating table.

10.- Page 5 of wizard. Window for data to extract. The headers contain the names of the Properties added in step 1, but the data (values) section contains nothing. A full preview shows the same.>>Next.

11.- Page 6 of Wizard. >>Select Insert data extracion table into drawing. >>Select Output data to external file.>>Name a Excel file to same Folder A of current drawing. >>Next.

12.- Page 7 of wizard. >>Next.

13.- Page 8 of Wizard.>>Finish.

14.- Insert the table in the drawing. Only Headers are shown.

15.- Check Excel file. Only headers are shown in a tab named summary.

Thank you in advance.

RGuerra.

Good Morning Phil,

I tried your suggestions and ran a purge, purge reg apps, and audit on each file.  One file had errors that were fixed, and all of the others had no errors.

I have a total of 36 files, all with one layout tab per drawing.  I tried selecting only 10 files for the data extraction and received the same error results, so I took it down to five files, again receiving the same error results.

I was concerned that the file with errors may have corrupted the .dxe file, so I created a new one, without selecting the file with the errors, and I received the same error: “Some of the drawing files referenced by the data extraction could not be found. What do you want to do?”  I am also experiencing the same unreferenced .dxe file that Mexicali8 is experiencing with the data extraction, and find that I am also unable to fix the path in the xref manager.

At this point, I could have typed the index several times over, but I really would like to have the data extraction work as it should for future use.

Since other people are experiencing the same error with different files as well as a different flavor of ACAD (I’m using Map 3D and Mexicali8 is using Civil 3D), I’m inclined to think that the problem is not with my specific files, or the fact that the attributed block is on paper space that is causing this issue with the data extraction or the broken xref link of the .dxe file.

Do you have any other ideas that Mexicalil8 and I could try to fix this error? Or is it possible we have found a bug?

Thanks again for your continued help.

Thanks Dolores. I am reaching out for further assistance from the AutoCAD core specialists. I've relocated this thread to the AutoCAD forum, because I think our Civil & Map people are going to be less valuable for understanding this issue...

This is from the first message.

This has to the best of my knowledge nothing to do with data extraction. It is a method to place information into the drawing file as metadata, so that windows explorer search options can easily find drawings.

Yes, probably there is no association, but in case it is…

What I did is give ‘would be debuggers’ all the information I could of how I got to the error.

As there are hundreds of attributes, variables, lines of code, and more that can be involved in the Data extraction procedure, and some of them may and others may not cause the error, I’m on the idea that reproducing as elaborate as possible all the steps that led to the error, software involved, Windows version, even processor model, will help debuggers pinpoint the culprit.

And thanks borycep for your help. Don't forget us.

Hi,

I just wanted to post that I have confirmed this as a problem in AutoCAD 2012 based products and have reported the issue to our development team for investigation. I've not been able to reproduce the issue in AutoCAD 2013 or 2014. That being said, if someone is able to reproduce the problem in 2013/2014 products please let us know.

Cheers,

Volker

I am having this problem with AutoCAD 2014 with all updates applied.   It generates an excel file that is empty except for the headers.

*Update*: I tried moving the files to the root C:\ folder from the network drive, and it worked.  So it's either that the Extract routine can't find things on network drives, or that the xrefs that were in the file are causing the problem and moving the file and breaking that link caused it, or something along those lines.

This is a bug.

Hi Everybody

I don't know if my post comes too late but I'll give my experience anyway.

I have a few DWG files with blocks containing attributes, start the command "Dataextra" to build a file, and a table within the drawing, with the information included in the attributes. Complete the wizard, create the DXE file, create the table, and everything seems fne.

Change some attribute values, update the data and everything is fine.

After a few days or a few comands and the update returns the error without any reason.

With some files it only happens weeks after. Reason? don't know why.

With some files the error doesn't even appears.

The behaviour is completely erratic, and the table building process is allways the same for every file.

I would like some help on this.

Using

Autocad 2015

Windows 7 Enterprise (Standard user accont)

Network environment

Thanks!

Best regards
