Thanks a lot. This helped greatly. Unfortunately this is a common work flow. Even if it is just for legacy purposes.

ztravis,

Would this work for versions other than 2013? Whe have drafters here having this problem with other versions of autocad.

The exact registry key modification needed depends upon a couple of things:

  • which version you have on your machine
  • which version created the OLE objects you're trying to edit

I made a short video (with audio narration) for a couple of other users that contacted me via the forum private messaging service.  I'm not sure why I haven't gotten around to posting that video here in this thread before now, so here it is.

Let me know whether or not that clears things up.

Hi Zac,

My name is Parveen. I have similar type of issue. I had Mechanical 2013 version and Office 2007. It was working fine but as I upgraded from Mechanical 2013 to Mechanical 2014, I started getting errors like can't open the source file ect. Could you please suggest some solution in registry where I need to change? My mail ID is parveendelhi@gmail.com. Please mail me the solution. I would be very grateful to you.

Thanks

parveen

Zac

Is there a solution for editing embedded AutoCAD LT 2012 files on a system with 2014 now installed?

Even though 2012 is still present, Excel fails to open the AutoCAD application when attempting to edit the embedded file.

Thanks in advance,

Keith Challinor

There should now be two CLSID keys on the system (the one which handles 2010 DWGs, and the one for 2013 DWGs).  It sounds like the one for accepting 2010 DWG content requests is not properly forwarding them to the 2013 DWG CLSID key.

Test things out by copying some objects from within the 2014 AutoCAD program and pasting them into a Word document.  Save the document and close both programs.  Open the Word document back up and see if you can edit the OLE object you just created.  If it correctly opens in 2014, then you'll at least know that part of it is working okay.

Next, check the CLSID key for 2010 DWGs {D70E31AD-2614-49F2-B0FC-ACA781D81F3E}.  Make sure that the LocalServer32 is the EXE file for 2012.  Also, check for an AutoConvertTo key.  If that is there, but pointing to the wrong CLSID, then that's the problem.  It should be pointing to the CLSID key for 2013 DWGs, which is {6A221957-2D85-42A7-8E19-BE33950D1DEB}.

I wanted to update this thread to let you know that Autodesk DWG TrueView 2015 adds an AutoConvertTo to the CLSID key which handles all 2013 DWG file requests.  The new key is as follows:

{149DD748-EA85-45A6-93C5-AC50D0260C98}

If you look into the 2013 DWG-handling key {6A221957-2D85-42A7-8E19-BE33950D1DEB}, you'll find that there's now an AutoConvertTo key which points to TrueView 2015's new CLSID key.  Assuming that you don't want TrueView 2015 handling you OLE requests from within Office documents, you have a couple of choices.

1.  Change the LocalServer32 value within TrueView's new {149DD748...} key to point at whichever EXE you want to handle the requests.

2.  Remove the AutoConvertTo key from the {6A221957...} key.
