AutoCAD 2013 - non-responsive

Hi, everyone.
I am a novice user and am encountering a problem that has to do w/ something I am sure know nothing about. AutoCAD, after what appears to be a completely normal RE!!!install & launch, goes into a non-responsive state. When I hover over buttons in the ribbon or menus, none of them get highlighted. Clicking on the ribbon tabs results in precisely nothing. Double-clicking several times on the tabs switches to them but in a minimized view... It is a nightmare. Sometimes the ribbon is even grayed out. What is really not making any sense is that minimizing and then maximizing the acad window is a temporary relief... I have a 64-bit win7 laptop with AMD graphics, 6gb ram, Intel dual-core i5 and a 64-bit ACAD. HELP! Projects are due...

Turn off Win7's Aero theme.

Change the hardware acceleration settings in AutoCAD (when it comes back up) from what you have it now.
