AutoCAD not responding when picking "Open" or "New"

AutoCAD has been working on my laptop for many months. All of a sudden when I start AutoCAD and do the "open" or "new" command, the software says "not responding". If I set variable "FILEDIA" to 0 it prompts me for the file name. I have tried to repair, uninstall and reinstall the software and it does the same thing. Any ideas?

Did you use your laptop with an external monitor recently, say just before this problem cropped up?

I have been using it with and without an external monitor. I don't believe the dialog box is displaying somewhere else because in the titlebar along the top of the sceen it says that AutoCAD is :not responding", like it can't find the dialogbox to open.

where is your default drawing template for QNEW set?  local or network.  If in a network file folder, try pointing "local" and see if it is still slow.

The default for QNEW is set to "none". When I try to change it by picking "browse" AutoCAD locks up and displays "not responding". When ever the software trys to display a dialog box showing the directory structure of my computer it stops responding.

Thanks for the responses, but things still aren't working. I looked at a couple similar posts and tried a clean uninstall with "Revo Uninstall", then I installed AutoCAD again and everything worked so I shut AutoCAD down and then later started it up and then it was the same old thing.

Does the problem go away if you reconnect to the external monitor?

Or reconnect to your office network?

"not responding" is a Windows prompt, not an AutoCAD prompt: usually means Windows is being involved in the problem (aka loss of connectivity to files/folders/drives/thumbdrives or other resources like drivers are not found).

So again, what's different now from the last time it worked? Of course you've uninstalled/reinstalled, so a lot of history is lost.

Unfortunately not. With the external monitor hooked up  or not, or hooked up to the college network or not, it goes to "not responding" whenever it wants to display the directory structure of the computer.

get a copy of process monitor from Microsoft's. run that, and see if you can figure out exactly what is hanging.

I understand that the "niot responding" is a windows fuction, but all my other programs are reading the directory structure and displaying the dialog boxes for opening and saving files.

Thanks. I will try "Process Monitor" and see what that tells me.
