Buying a computer with AutoCAD preloaded?

I need to upgrade my computer and get a copy of AutoCAD. I dont need a new computer, just one with newer components to handle the newest version of AutoCAD, as mine is relatively old. I have read that buying the software from someone secondhand doesnt transfer the license, but what if a computer with the software already on it is purchased? Thanks

The license still belongs to the owner of that computer, may be if you buy his whole business (company) and paying annually giving he's on subscription.

I saw them on ebay before (illegal of course) and you'll be in trouble when the software stop working and you try to reinstall, Autodesk will not let you activate.

Thanks for the quick reply. If that is the case, is there anywhere I can buy an older version of AutoCAD? I dont need any of the features past 2007

Thanks for the suggestion. I've been looking at the LT version, but unfortunately the project I am about to book is required to be in 3D. I guess Ill just have to look at someone other than Autodesk. Its sad, really. I love AutoCAD, but as someone in an independant work scenario, I just dont have the capital to buy that and Autodesk makes it impossible for someone to buy anything except the latest release.

OP I may be wrong but I think 2004 was the last version that wasn't complex to load as long as you had all the required numbers. There are issues with loading those old programs on newer operating systems though, as they worked best with XP. Having said that, the route I took was to use my tax return to buy Inventor LT Suite plus the subscription. It came with AutoCAD LT and at the time there was a $300 rebate, so you may want to keep your eyes open for special offers on this site. The subscription is worth the fee, because among other things it comes with support, learning materials, annual upgrades, the cloud etc.

Depending on what you need it for, there are competitive products out there (such as ProgeCAD Pro) that are inexpensive and may be comparable to AutoCAD 2004. My understanding is that Draftsight is free, as are some ProgeCAD products, but I don't know if they leave any watermark warnings about illegal use on them. Still, I don't think they come close to what AutoCAD offers. The last best AutoCAD was probably 2008 because of a whole host of productivity improvements. After that came the dreaded (by some) Ribbon, but even that isn't so bad once you drink the koo...oops I mean once you get used to it :smileywink:

If by some odd chance my nattering was useful -- that's great, glad to help. But if it actually solved your issue, then please mark my solution as accepted :smileyhappy:

One more possibility is TigerDirect was selling PCs already loaded with AutoCAD or AutoCAD LT, or you could get the software separately, and I think they were also selling the subscriptions. Yo uhave to buy the program to buy the subscription, just to be clear...
