laymrg doesn't seem to do anything

Hi all

I'm trying to merge 2 layers in AutoCAD 2012.

When using LAYMGR I can select both layers, the model regenerates but once regerenerated both layers are still present & nothing has changed.

Both layers are unlocked etc & neither are the current layer.

I have purged the .dwg, run an audit & also tried with other layers but the same thing happens ie nothing.

I've accessed it via FORMAT & via the cmd line, I've tried selcting the layers on the plan as well as the name via the layer table.

I don't seem to get an option to confirm or rename the new layer at all & sure I'm missing something very obvious.

Any idea?

Many tanks in advance

Welcome to the Autodesk forums 2Bit!

this is how I use the LAYMRG command (from text screen)

Command: LAYMRG

Select object on layer to merge or [Name]: (did select one object in layer1)
Selected layers: Layer1.
Select object on layer to merge or [Name/Undo]: (enter)
Select object on target layer or [Name]: (did select one object in layer2)
******** WARNING ********

There are 1 block definition(s) which reference the layer(s) you are merging.
The block(s) will be redefined and the entities referencing the layer(s)
will be changed to reference layer "Layer2".

You are about to merge layer "Layer1" into layer "Layer2".

Do you wish to continue? [Yes/No] <No>: y

Redefining block "a".

Deleting layer "Layer1".
1 layer deleted.
Command:

If it does not solve, post a sample dwg...

Hi Henrique

Many thanks for the prompt response.

I don't get anything below -

Command: LAYMRG

Select object on layer to merge or [Name]: (did select one object in layer1)
Selected layers: Layer1.
Select object on layer to merge or [Name/Undo]: (enter)
Select object on target layer or [Name]: (did select one object in layer2)

When I select an object in layer 2 I press enter & the model regenerates.

No warnings. No block refs. No 'are you sure?'

Am I not doing something right or is there a setting somewhere that needs adjusting?!

I'm unable to post up a .dwg for security reasons

cheers

Without a dwg is hard to guess...

Only for testing purposes, start a new dwg, creates two layers and try the LAYMRG command.

It works fine in a new .dwg with 3 simple layers

Could it be something to do with the type of objects on the layers?  Its a combo of lines, shapes, text and groups

Here is how it should be working.

If you have some AEC objects, try -EXPORTTOAUTOCAD command first, and then the LAYMRG command.

Thats how it works in the new test .dwg I tried but in my 50+ layer .dwg I can choose the target layer but after that the model regenerates & nothing..

I get the msg -

Command not allowed because drawing contains objects from a newer version of this application.

Seems that the dwg was created on a newer version, try to -EXPORTTOAUTOCAD in that newer version before using the LAYMRG command.
You can try dxfout and dxfin...not tested

Not quite sure how thats happend as this is a file from last years event & AutoCAD 2012 is the most upto date version we have here ie everything should be older than 2012 & not newer!!

I'ver tried dxfout/in & get the same message

I really dont understand how there is anything in the .dwg from a newer version:

i've opened last years .dwg in autoCAD 2012, created new layers/lines/objects/text etc, haven't imported anything from any other .dwg and then saved with a new name.

Its either all older than 2012 or indeed created in CAD 2012.

Any way I can check/verify layer assets?

Cheers

You don't need post whole drawing, just part of it, even a few lines, as long as it has the same problem.

It is easier to investigate the problem with the sample drawing.

Morning

I've just copy & pasted a section of the dwg onto a new dwg in order to post up but discovered that this actually merges the layers fine.

I'm now trying to copy & paste everything onto a new template

Nope - copy & past of everything doesn't work.... The same thing happens
