I learned Autocad on release 12 and then migrated to r14 and 2001. Nowadays most
drafting is done with r14. However I want to be able to insert a .jpg into the drawing
environment and draw lines over it.
Specifically, I want to take pictures of Christopher Dressers designs and bring them
into Autocad and then trace over them. I feel I will get a huge education into architectural
ornament as well as becoming more facile with lines.
I haven't kept up with Autocad's upgrades but undoubtedly the later releases have this
functionality. Which one will work?
Thanks
Rick
Hi,
welcome @forums.autodesk.com !

Is possible for ages now, command _IMAGE lets you insert(reference the image, then you can use the default commands in AutoCAD (like _PLINE, _LINE, ..) to draw vectors in your drawing.
Or do I understand anything wrong?

2001 never exited 😉 There was a jump from 2000 to 2000i and then 2002.
What version are you currently working with?

since the only version you can still legally purchase is 2014, that's the only one that will do what you want.
That said, if you normally work with R14, jumping to 2014 will be large expense, as well as a huge leaning curve. You might be happier with the free Draftsight program - which will import a jpg and let you draw on top of it. DS is a dwg compatible program, suitable for what you are describing. It is not a full replacement for Acad 2014 by any measure, but it does not sound like that's what you need or want.
I mostly work with r14. (If you can believe that!) The 2000 version I have is the Lt and I often work in 3d.
Thanks for the tip on Draftsight, I'll try that. I don't want to sink a bunch of money into this.
Out of curiousity, what has changed with AC since r2000?
Thanks for the help
Hi,

That needs an answer with the amount of a book with >100 pages.
>> I often work in 3d
That part is completly different to what you have now (and more easy). If you really work a lot 3D I would look some videos in the www how nowadays 3D-design/construction is done.

Why can't you use r14 to do what you want?
The CADWhisperer YouTube Channel
it's been a while, bit i don't recall R14 supporting images as insert. IIRC we used an add-on, one that eventually became known as Raster Design.
(I may still have my R14 mousepad, but the software is long gone.)
