I am using AutoCAD Mechanical 2012, and I haven't used the command in a while, but now that I need the AM2DHIDE, it is now unlisted in the Modify menu and is "unknown" when entered. I also saw AMSHIDE mentioned in Exchange, but it also is unlisted and "unknown."
What gives?
Is there something new and improved?

I'd say that your answer lies in the ACAD Mech forum.
Make sure you didn't open a drawing with the Vanilla AutoCAD profile instead of Mechanical. It sounds like you may have. Or, you need to fix your installation of Mechanical, as nothing has changed through 2015 and those two commands still exist.
That's the first thing I checked. I am without a doubt using Mechanical.
Repair/reinstall. )-:
Both commands are there in 2014M. In the Ribbon go to the Home tab, Detail panel, AMSHIDE.
If you have autocomplete on type *hide* at the command line (include the asterisks) and you should see the commands.
I have 2014 but it should be very similar to 2012.
