Re: Using Windows Explorer to Search for text in DWG files

Great tools Terry.  But I don't need all of the rest of the stuff, we have a lot of similar ones already available to us.

Is there a way to get the dwgsearch by itself?

Thanks,

Don

We installed this on our servers and linked from workstations. Seems to be working, but the indexing crawler is going to take some time. Day two and counting.

I am not getting the results I desire. I have set the filters to only look at .dwg files, and selected only text and attributes as the item type to search. If I search for 'wall' I get files with wall in the name. if I search for "wall" If i search text:wall I get nothing and yet I know there is text in the files that reads 'wall'. What am I missing?

Hi,

can you upload such a file with text "Wall" and not found by Content-Explorer?

it's only been a few days.... and no way to manage or prioritize the content service.  I would not be suprised if it takes a week or two to do the initial indexing of the drawings/other files on your server.

Alfred,

I am going to hold off on that request. Checking our 'active' file server, it is still indexing. It has been 3 days, but there is 600gb of data in 440,000 files that need to be indexed. So I am guessing this could take weeks. This doesn't help me for my current deadline, but I am discovering even being able to isolate drawings by name/ type/ folder, is a vast improvement over Windows functionality. I run Windows 7 Pro, and it cannot index our servers. Which is baffling to me that the Pro version is not sympathetic to a server environment, go figure. But I digress. This has the potential to be one of the most useful data mining tools available to me. Our older records are sparse on information, so being able to mine text from old cover sheets is a far easier task than going through the hundreds of filling cabinets in the archive. I will check back in week and post progress.

Thank you,

Clint

This may be of some help to address the current need until you get ready with Content Explorer.

The Free tool BatchInDatabase could help you to find out the text from the multiple drawings without opening them.

Run the command "Text - Find & Replace" in all the files to be searched  and set the save option to "Do not save"

The batch status will show you the no of match found in each file.
