Separate 3D solid shading

Couple of queries...

1. Is there any way to apply a solid shade to selected objects within a model leaving the rest displayed in 2D wireframe?

2. Which solid shading option requires the least graphics/cpu power?

The reason I ask is two-fold. Performance of both laptop and workstation deteriorates massively when entire model is solid shaded. Isolating layers obviously helps but is not practical majority of the time. Also, for demonstration purposes, it would be convenient to solid shade some objects but not others.

Any ideas?
