Searching for text in DWG files

I have have read that if you install AutoCAD 2006 or later that windows search will also search inside DWG drawings finding embedded text that matches.

I am using Windows 7 and AutoCAD 2010 and this does not seem to work. Does anyone know anything about this?

i don't know about 7 but I believe in XP you needed Desktop Search installed but that it would slow down your machine. I would also suspect that it would function the same as PDF and DWFx text search in that it would only search text that was a TT Font and not the ACAD shx fonts.

while you wait...

ADCENTER command's Search feature does all that and more while inside
AutoCAD. Regardless of font types :smileyhappy:)

The OP stated:
"..search inside DWG drawings finding embedded text..."
I assume the OP is referring to TEXT and/or MTEXT objects (and possibly dimension text as well).
You state:
"ADCENTER command's Search feature does all that and more..."
Although I would agree to the "more" part (i.e. attribute tags or values), I have not seen anything in DesignCenter that will find DWGs containing specific, "embedded text". Could you help me (and the OP) locate the option or feature that allows you to do this?

I assumed embedded as in blocks.

Using the Search function in DesignCenter, how would you search for drawings containing blocks with certain embedded text?

The functionality for search file contents is available via the windows search tool. You can choose to search for files containing certain text. AutoCAD 2010 has an iFilter dll that allows windows to index dwg's. The problem we had was it wasn't installed correctly out of the box. Ran across a known issue in the documentation for Update 2 that just came out describing how this functionality was broken by update 1. The fix is to copy AcUt.dll from your "C:\Program Files\AutoCAD Map 3D 2010\" folder over to the "C:\Program Files\Common Files\AutoDesk Shared\ AcDwgFilter\" folder.

We're running XP and this fixed the windows text search for us. The problem we're having now is that it won't find text in Dwg's saved to the new 2010 file format. Don't know why that is. I'm searching for a solution on it now.

Hope this helps.
