Missing SHX file

I know this may be a novice question (and an annoying one) but I just started at a new place and we consistently get the missing shx box popping up on when opening a dwg. I think i understand that this is caused by other getting us files with embedded shx's and they arent sent with the dwg so Acad can find them. I have created a Fonts folder and added to my support search path under options. I took an existing shx file and renamed it to the one that is missing and I still have the problem. F2 is telling me this:

Survey.shx is a normal text font file, not a shape file.

Survey.shx is a normal text font file, not a shape file.
Substituting [simplex.shx] for [MMPROP.shx].

How can I solve this problem if I dont have the original shx file? Thanks for your help. (please see attachment)

File types with .shx extensions that AutoCAD recognizes can either be Font
files or Shape files.
Your solution to take an existing file and call it Survey.shx is a temporary
fix.
But for it to work, you would have to find an existing .shx file that is a
Shape file and call that Survey.shx .
Then the dwg may open without those annoying missing shx popup boxes.
But the graphic representation, if any Shape files are used in the drawing,
will most likely be incorrect.

Thanks Paul. How do I tell if it is a existing shape file (so i can copy and rename) if both of them share the .shx extension?

You can't tell. That's another problem.
But you can use AutoCAD's LOAD command to select a file with .shx extension
to see if it loads.
If it does, then that's a Shape file.

Hi,

See if you can find some history of the drawing and you may be able to
identify who supplied the drawing. They will have the shape file.

Some extra information about the drawing may help identify the file you
need.

For example if you are working in the Civil/Survey field, the "Stringer"
program uses a "survey.shx" which is supplied with the program.

Check out http://cadd.den.nps.gov/standards.html#Fonts

NPSfonts.zip contains a SURVEY.SHX

Google is your friend.

If you receive files like this in the future, ask the sender to send the drawing via eTransmit (Menu Browser>Send>eTransmit).

It grabs all external files (xrefs, fonts, images etc) and bundles them together so that the recipient can see the file exactly how the sender sees it at the other end.

You can also play with the FONTALT command to change the default missing font replacement.

Can you rename a shape or font file and point a drawing to look for that specific renamed file?
