AutoCAD Crashes When Closing Multiple Drawings

Hi All,

If I have several drawings open at the same time and have done work to some of them, at the end of the day I just pick the AutoCAD application "close" button (the "X" in the top-right corner of the window) and I'm prompted "Save changes to <drawing>?" for each of the drawings.

Unfortunately, most of the times I do this in AC2011, AutoCAD crashes. The next time I open AutoCAD, it initiates the recover but all the changes have been saved in the *.dwg file.

Before you tell me, I know this is not the best way to save and close drawings but it has never been a problem. Is this a bug?

Sal

This also happens when changes are made to a single drawing and the user picks the "X" to close the drawing (not the app.) Sometimes the drawing closes WITHOUT saving the changes and sometimes AutoCAD crashes.

We have brand-new computers with Windows 7, dual core, 64bit and 12 GB RAM.

This HAS to be a bug in 2011. Hasn't this happened to anyone else?

Is this happening to all files open in 2011?  How are you storing/accessing these files?  Are these stored local /network server/network storage device/sharepoint/external hard drive?  Windows 7 has a few controls that can bog down the system and cause a crash possible if the right circumstances are presented.  To further investigate the crash, please supply the email you are submitting crash with and a screen shot of the error if possible please.

While you work out the reasons with the Autodesk-er here, try some of the tips we end users have discovered to stop most crashes from taking place, see if any apply to you:

- Turn off Hardware Acceleration within AutoCAD, icon on the lower right near workspace and toolbar lock.
- Use Windows 7 Classic/Basic Theme (not AERO or Custom Theme). You miss some of the Aero whizz-bang features, like layout preview and other niceties,  but overall performance seems better for some users.
- Win7's Aero Glass option sometimes turned on by your PC/laptop's manufacturer, turn it off for all your power options.
note: you can turn Aero visual effects off for individual programs by right-clicking the shortcut, go to properties, then Compatibility Tab...check Disable Visual Themes.
- Find out what's causing Win7 reliability issues (crashes or application hangs) type reliability in the Instant Search bar to open the Reliability Monitor; it will show your system's reliability history over a period of time and what seems to hit your reliability the most.
- See a system diagnostic of your computer in Win7: Either go to Administrative Tools, then to Performance Monitor, and finally to Data Collector Sets to launch the System Diagnostic DCS, or simply open up an administrator command prompt and type perfmon /report.
- Start Windows 7 in Diagnostic Mode. If it works here the cause of the problems may be the display or pointer drivers, another driver, a background process (such as an antivirus application).

AutoCAD settings:

- Turn off the modeless layer palette: or use the old Layer dialog box (set LAYERDLGMODE to 0)
- Turn off any palette transparency.
- Turn off SelectionCycling, SC button at bottom of screen
- Set hpdlgmode to 1  and/ or hpquickpreview to off.
- Change rollovertips to 0 (off)
- Set qpmode to 0 (off)
- Set SHOWLAYERUSAGE to 0 (off).

Thank you for your information on the crash.  I see that the fatal error is consistent in our tracking database for you.  In all the comments I have not seen a repaired tried in addition to this Dean makes some good suggestions on how to tweak the Win 7 operating system along with AutoCAD software to work together for the user.

Thanks Michael,

I will try the repair however, this crash sequence is happening on a couple computers. Is it possible that they all need "repaired?"

This upgrade to 2011 was done with a network deployment onto new computers. Is it possible that the network deployment was bad and so all the installs are bad?

It is possible but to test I would first start with one PC.  If the deployment is the culprit you will need to re-deploy.

That's good stuff Dean.  I keep a little text file with these kinds of tweeks.  I had a couple but most are new to me.

... especially helpful is the Windows 7 tweeks ... I just got 7 and I'm trying to make it work fo me cause I don't like its default settings.

Thanks a bunch

Have a nice weekend
