First! Thank you Alfred, problem detected (but not fully solved!)
I zoomed to 0,0 100,100 and yes! It actually worked again. Then I zoomed back to my current position (zoom extend), and it worked there. Then I scrolled a bit and then the area was back to its "normal" error-mode...
I've had some issues before with the hatch command because of "far away" coordinate position.
So it did ring a bell...
But unfortunately we have to work in "real world" coordinate and this is pretty far north, even for a Norwegian (Coordinates: 67°39'21"N 12°43'13"Ø), which is about 200 km north from the polar circle...
Any suggestions how to deal with it?

Maybe it's a help to define a UCS with an origin near your working zone before starting command _AREA?

Brilliant idea, but unfortunately it didn't worked...
maybe I should work in a drawing close to AutoCAD 0,0 reference the shared map into it and then referece my drawing back into a shared drawing, so I don't mess up with the project team...
Been working with AutoCAD since vs. 12 -and still learning...
if command _AREA does not work you can try two other options:
a) draw a temporary polyline ....or....
b) create a temporary hatch
....and after creating one of these select the object and you'll see the area in the property-window (indenpendent from geographical zone/coordinates).

I did that since the error first appeared. But found it a bit more timeconsuming, so I took the tour around the discussion forum to break the spell with a little wizard help from guys like you ;-)
But since its spring; its almost time for vs. 2013, witch might put an end to the problem (and might give us some new troubles to deal with...)
