In Acad 2012 (sp1, w64), it seems that, if a hatch has a scale too
big to have something showing into the boundary, it renders as a
solid hatch ! (previously, it rendered empty, as expected).
The attached file demonstrates the issue, with "dots" hatch samples
at various scales. You can see that, at scale 80,
where no point should be visible, it becomes solid !
It's a major annoyance, since I have lots of lisp-based automatic
hatching of things, and, while it's not a problem to have an empty
hatch whenever the boundary is too small for a given scale, getting
a solid hatch instead is a big no-no.
How to get rid of this ?

first: I can reproduce the issue, I would see that as bug.
To now get you to a workaround I tried to reset the hatch-base-point, redefinig it/setting the point within the rectangle would solve the problem (at least for this area).

Another workaround. I found if I "inherited properties" from another of the hatches and set the scale to 80 it would work too. Unfortunately it only works one .dwg at a time.
Just to let you know that this is not a bug, this change is as designed.
Now you can see the hatch and change it or erase it if you don't need it anymore (as it was invisible previously and increasing the file size).

What is "as designed"? The scalefactor?
In Fa3ien's drawing you see different scales assigned to the hatches and with the example scale=80 it switches to SOLID ==> is now the scale-factor the trigger for changing the visuality of the hatch?
Than I won't understand why reassigning a base-point makes it possible to have the value 80 as valid?
Sorry for having problems with the phrase "as designed" (it is told to often) ==> reducing the hatch-density to a value under a threshold does not have to result in FULL FILLED. For me that is no "solution".
And for selecting ... look to the attached drawing (2 viewports, different scales ==> the hatch is visualized differently) where you can select a hatch at least in the right viewport ... and there is _QSELECT also for selecting

Sorry I did not explain properly.
The change that is as designed is that in AutoCAD 2012, hatches that were invisible in previous versions will show as solid.
I hope this helps.
sorry to bother you, but please solve the situation in my drawing with the "as designed solution".
The situation is:
And ... it's no choice to remove the annotation-scale from that hatch, because there could be more then one hatch and therefor there could be polylines with more area (and so the hatch visible as "light-dotted") .... and that could be hundreds of hatches ==> so manually choose annotation-scales remove/add hatch by hatch/scale by scale is also not a possible way.
