    licensing question on upgrade.

    Hello,

I currently have AutoCad 2010 which I upgraded to from 2009 stand alone. Both products are registered to me. I am thinking of upgrading to 2013. My question is: When I update to a new version, can I have an individual instance of my previous version installed?

In other words, If I upgrade to 2013 and have it installed on my home computer, can I also have my 2010 installed on another computer and not have to transfer the license between them?

I guess what I'm asking is if they are considered separate products or are they linked as one individual product.

    Thanks

An individual license permits you to have AutoCAD installed on two computers provided you are the only user, and you do not use them concurrently.  There should be no need to transfer licenses.   The problem you may encounter is that if you "upgrade" your existing 2010 license to 2013, you really only posess a license to use 2013 (however there is a 120 day trial period where you may continue to use both).  If 2010 is installed on both you should be able to upgrade either one to 2013 while continuing to use 2010 on the other.... but if you attempt to apply a patch, or repair/re-install AutoCAD2010 >120 days after upgrading the other computer to 2013, it will  detect that your license is for 2013, and will end your access to 2010.

The "proper" thing to do if you need access to both 2010 and 2013 on a single license is to purchase a Subscription, which allows you to install and use the current version + 3 versions back.  Subscription permits a single license to be installed on 3 computers (Primary Location / Portable Computer / Home Use ) not to mention a free upgrade to the next version.

It's never a bad idea to call Autodesk, or your Reseller to make sure your Upgrade purchase is one that suites your requirements.

Thank you for answering this question. One note regarding contacting Autodesk: When I originally purchased 2009, I was able to call Autodesk and speak with an individual. (I purchased the 2010 upgrade from a third party)

However, in trying to figure out whether to upgrade to 2013, I can't seem to find a way to contact a live individual; all the online menus direct me to "self service" or to this forum. Do you or any other readers know if it is possible to contact an Autodesk representative directly? Maybe I'm looking at the wrong screen.

    Thanks!

There is a 1-800 number at the bottom of the first link, otherwise you can try to use the Locator to find a Reseller in your area if you don't already have one.  Resellers should be able to provide answers to your licensing questions.
