The attached dwg contains a polyline object that looks like an ellipse.

Can anyone tell me how this object was created?

thanks for the reply

your object is labeled a "polyline" by AutoCAD,

whereas my object is labeled a "lwpolyline"

so they are not quite the same are they?

They are the same.

LWpoly uses less memory, earlier version r12.... use heavyweight poly

Use CONVERTPOLY and select the one you like.
