Setting HPMAXLINES to 10,000,000 and then loading the dwg worked for me, too.
Unfortunately, Autodesk had previously advised me to set HPMAXLINES to an relatively low number - 500 - because I was locking up the software when I grabbed a hatch object.
Not sure what the ultimate solution is.

Our AutoCAD 2012 users are also having this same problem. It occurs when opening older drawings and when creating drawings.
We run a lisp routine to automate the hatching of stratigraphic logs. Since we use the solid pattern for coal, the solid hatch replacement is creating a big problem..
In the previous versions of AutoCAD (before 2012), if an area was to small for the hatch pattern scale, it appeared as if AutoCAD would skip it and display 'boundary to small to hatch'. Now it seems that AutoCAD will hatch regardless of the boundary area, but it will display a solid hatch although the correct hatch is assigned to that boundary.
I have tried everyone's suggestions and I still cannot get past the hatch turning solid. The only solution I did find is to change the hatch scale; however, I also discovered that the size of the boundary is dictating the scale of the hatch to get it to display properly.
Since we generate many strip logs with many boundaries in varying sizes, to hatch edit every wrong solid hatch pattern really defeats efficiency in our processing of the work.
Please - try my theory and let me know if you agree. And Please - anyone - let me know if this issue gets resolved or if anyone has found a work around.
Thanks,

I know this was posted a year ago but we are experiencing the same problem with the hatch turning solid. Has a solution been found for this?

This just started showing up today. I've tried everything and the HPMAXLINES is set 1000000.
Set the varible to 10 000 000
1 000 000 is too low
