Inside the trim command I cannot hit "shift" to switch to the extend command instead.

    any suggestions?

You must hold the Shift key down while picking on the object.

It may be a system variable issue.

i can't seem to select anything if holding down the shift key in other commands as well.

(similar post - cant toggle ortho mode with the shift key anymore - ortho comes on but i can't pick a point)

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Command: TRIM

    Current settings: Projection=View, Edge=Extend
    Select cutting edges ...
Select objects or <select all>: Specify opposite corner: 2 found

    Select objects:

Select object to trim or shift-select to extend or
    [Fence/Crossing/Project/Edge/eRase/Undo]:

After starting the TRIM command and selecting the cutting edges, does it remind you that you can use shift, as shown above in red?
