Trapped within viewport window

While working in the layout view I double-clicked the viewport window. The screen then was blank with a dashed red line as a border.
I don't recall what I did to get out of this, but I probably hit escape a few times. Now the original drawing is shown and the viewport window is highlited (bolded). I can no longer select the drawing, but can zoom within the viewport window. I can flip between the other layout views (which are unaffected). I'd like to get out of whatever command or setting I double-clicked in to.
Help, please.

VPMAX and VPMIN are the commands for this. There is also a button on the
status bar.

You can also double-click on the red border to bring you back to the Layout
