We recently migrated our fileshare project drawings from Window Server 2003 to Window Server 2008-R2 x64
We are experiencing slowness opening or only right click button on more dwg on XP Pro 32/64bit workstation.
Problem repeats if you try to copy many dwg files from windows explorer, right button properties
i have already disabled "validate digital signatures and display special icons" on each machine
There isn't any slowness problem opening files on other application e.g.. Office.
Anyone know the solution to the slowness issue

Hi Alessio,
Is it only one XP station that presents the issue?
Are you using a NAS device?
Are you using a DFS (Distributed File System) server?
Does the user have enough rights to the files and folders?
Does disabling firewall and antivirus (or even uninstalling) help?
Cheers,
Luciane

Dear Luciane,
thank you for your response.
- Every workstation, about 30, with xp prof. -64bit (with mech+inv 2011) and some with xp prof -32bit (with dwg true view 2011) presents the issue
- We don't use a NAS and DFS.
- User have R+W rights to the files and folders.
- Machine firewall is disable by enterprise policy and the problem occurs even disabling the antivirus.

Hi Alessio,
can you confirm to me that if you disable the SMB2 the performance become "normal"?
This should indicate if is really a SMB2 issue.
Please follow the steps on this link to disable the SMB2 protocol http://www.petri.co.il/how-to-disable-smb-2-on-win

this is a very serious problem that Autodesk so far has refused to do anything about. There have been no patches, fixes or updates to correct this.
We have been experiencing this problem and it has had VERY SERIOUS repercussions on our network traffic and server load.
Essentially what happens is this: When a client (desktop computer) opens a file on a distant file server running 2008r2, it "holds" the file open generating traffic. In a regular scenario, the client opens the files, loads it locally, then the network activity back to the server drops off. Howerver, because of this bug with SMB2, the client continues "talking to the server".
Imagine this scenario when you have 50+ CAD users.
Shame on Autodesk for not testing this before. Windows 2008 server has been out for a while. Someone on their dev teams is sleeping at the switch.

we've resolved the issue so far by setting our 2008r2 server to use SMB1 instead of SMB2. It's a temporary fix that we dont really like, but since Autodesk is unresponsive about this (as usual) we dont really have any choice.
changing to SMB1 has reduce the amount of network overhead, and reduce the CPU usage on our CAD file server.
I would like to point out that you should check and make sure this is not a drawing issue before you go making server changes. Specifically, you want to use a network tracking tool to monitor network traffic and CPU usage. Slow drawings can be linked to many other issues other than the SMB one

Thanks. I've been troubleshooting a lot. I am seeing a lot of SMB traffic so I want to try this setting. We use XP workstations with Windows 2008R2 servers. The trouble started when we migrated from Windows 2003. We have about 100 locations, about 15 locations are migrated and have these performance problems.
But I have to reboot the server for the change.
