I also have a problem with files saving as "read only" unprompted. I will be as much help as the AutoDesk forums because I have no solution. Copying the file from the server to my desktop, working on it, then copying the file back to the server has curtailed the read only problem but it doesn't fix it. This is bad for the design process because it often results in multiple files with multiple changes from multiple users. Autodesk tech support is super helpful, it tells me to contact my Contract Manager, so I click on that, and wouldn't you know it, it's my boss Larry. Turns out Larry has no idea what I'm talking about and wants to send me to El Salvador. I wonder if Bentley is this good at support. Another thing: Who gets up in the morning and says "I'm gonna go answer some questions in the forum today." Good luck, and emoticon.

Actually, a few of us are perverse enough to troll the forums....
WHen you open a drawing, ACAD creates a .DWL file, or a drawing lock, in the drawing's directory. If you loose network access, the .DWL isn't automatically erased like it is when you close "normally" Reopening the drawing sees the DWL and assumes that the lock means the drawing is in use. Hence Pendean's answer......
So, is the issue a loss of connectivity and/or crashing out of a drawing, or is it happening every time you try to open a drawing? I need more information to help you any further.

Oh, and try deleting the .DWL file - you should see the "read only" go away....
