AutoCAD 2010/2011/2012 DWG Format

there are a LOT of "legacy" tools that are now work arounds that i still use, and some graet "features" that have been nerfed over the years. don't get me started on the time and space waster that is the ribbon.

whoever had that brilliant idea owes me SEVERAL drinks.

that said, the rework of icons for 2010 is remarkably well done, except that "explode" should still be that little stick of dynamite. (i do like 2008 for overall look though)

Wow, and I thought I was the only one who disliked the
CUI.  I like getting into the ascii files and building my menus by
hand.  I don't trust the computer to screw it over while trying to compile
it.

I gritted my teeth and perservered with the Ribbon during v2009 but after a brief fling with 2008 recently it brought back fond memories. And a sign of of relief as we both merrily whizzed along actually getting some work done. With 2010 I finally gave up on the Ribbon and went back to toolbars.

I could've forgave the interface changes if the performance hadn't taken a beating. I'm using the fastest computer I ever used and yet AutoCAD 2010 is the slowest I've ever used. No, actually 2009 was the slowest.

And in 2010, some idiot bugs have appeared in commands that have worked for years.

It just all adds up to a feeling of crumbling at the edges...

But there are a lot of us that have absolutely NO NEED for 3D. Why force us
into something else we don't need?

If you don't like it, turn it off like most of us do.

The strategy behind the ribbon is to try to 'steer' new users away from
using the AutoCAD command line, because dependence on that hinders attempts
to get them to upgrade away from AutoCAD or AutoCAD LT, to another product
with 3D functionality that actually works.

It seems the main issue is that users who changed from pre-2009 versions to 2009 or newer got the shock of their life (like I did) with the radical GUI change, asking themselves where did everything go. Lots of things that were one click items are now 2 or 3 or more clicks to get to etc. Change is inevitable, and I don't think we will convince Autodesk to not follow Microsoft interfaces. I think we are all thankful they imitated Excel with the multiple paper space tabs back in 2000.
Where Autodesk has failed is in not considering the end user's work environment -- it would have been better to have introduced a hybrid GUI with the "classic menu" as well as the Ribbons. That way a user could keep right on working with what he or she is used to, and try out the new features at his or her leisure. However the horse is out of the barn as they say...
I have had to take the time to set mine up just as I have described, with positive results using both systems.
As for the poster who said she doesn't need 3D, I would suggest LT -- you can still do wireframe 3D with it, and manipulate 3D objects.
To the poster who said 2009 is slow, I had the worst time with save times on 2009 and 2010 and finally got some good advice from Autodesk -- look into "visual fidelity" on the help section, and see if changing the settings can work for your particular situation. It worked for me -- thanks Autodesk! :-)
P.S. ther're also indexctl, xloadctl, xloadpath and demandload to look into, for working more efficiently with XREFs...

it's a good thing Autodesk makes toys instead of work tools....

I really do appreciate the *intent* of the ribbon and new cui, however there is no denying that it took a streamlined task (clicking a particular button) and made it more complicated and slower, while taking up more real estate. Why any architect or engineer would consider this a good thing in terms of FUNCTION is beyond me. yes, i like my tools to be aesthetically pleasing too, but if form wins over function you're at art, not tool.

No, I didn't miss it. The point was being pushed
into a 3D platform. I'm quite proficient with the 3D in ACAD and have lots of
fun with it. We just have little to no use for it at work. There are a
lot of tools in the full that are not in LT that have nothing to do with the 3D
end of the stick.
