I attended the very first AU. That was enough for me!

can't argue that point. I do stuff all the time that benefits me more
than it might benefit my customers. Difference is I'm sneakier than
    Autodesk :smileyhappy:

First off if you read my posts you will see that I am in the NNTP camp so I
am not by any means advocating the web forum.

To clarify my statement, if Autodesk were making this change exclusively for
their benfit, then why offer the service at all? It would be cheaper to just
terminate it. So what would be the motive for continuing the service? Logic
tells me that by offering a support forum the users of their products will
gain value from their product which will in turn keep their business. That
is the two way benefit. It makes financial sense.

If my reasoning is sound, then I would think Autodesk would be interested in
the impact of the change on the user's experience. Of course, as has been
suggested, they may be looking at the change as an advertising venue. So
far, in my experience, none of the corporate web based user forums I use
serve up advertising via the forum, including the ADESK web forum, so I am
not inclined to believe that is a primary motive.

    Oh, that's a real brain-twister.

It allows them to *control* (e.g, filter and censor) what their
    customers see here.

I honestly believe that's the *only* reason these discussion
groups have existed this long in the first place. It is because
in their absense, customers would go elsewhere to find peer
support, places where Autodesk has no control over what
    their customers see.

They originally created their own newsgroups because they
could not censor what was posted on comp.cad.autocad, or
the various other related usenet newsgroups. At the time,
comp.cad.autocad was full of discussions comparing various
other products (mostly MicroStation) and AutoCAD-workalikes
to AutoCAD, and that was clearly having an effect, and many
of the participants were from the vendors of those products,
and were simply using the forum for promotional purposes.

At the time, most of us spurned pure advertising (spamming)
of those newsgroups, but welcomed legitmate discussions
comparing products, and that's what Autodesk didn't like.

    So, now you know.

I've never been censored on the ADESK forums. I have been pretty vocal at
times and have frequently extoled Microstation and Power Civil over Autocad
and Civil 3D. You may have a valid point, but based on my experience I'm
not convinced that is a primary motivation.

My argument to that would be: If they were interested in the opinion
of the users, they would have asked before making this decision,
which, because they didn't, tells me it's not up for debate.

IOW- my perception is... "we are doing this, we don't care what you
think, but we hope you'll stay around and participate" - and I suspect
in the long run, not much will change here. I seem to recall some flak
when they removed "take5", but whatever became of that? Nothing
noticible today... If a few long time users never return, there are
plenty of "mid-time" users who will step in and take their place. For
95% of the people who stick their head in here looking for an answer,
it doesn't matter what screen name it comes from....

I prefer the previous method. This method is cumbersome and time consuming.

The web interface has never appealed to me. it appears slower and not as
    flexible.

That's only because here you don't see what you would
otherwise see if it were not Autodesk's server.

Most competitors would not bother trying to promote
their products here because they already know that
    they'll be censored.

And yes, censorship is alive and well here.
