Same as Jon here, item still "Selected" even though Properties says No Selection. If I select another command that command will be applied to the object that the properties says is not selected. Also, same as Jon Double Click does not work since the object is "selected".
Right click and deselect all does unselect the object but if you select another object the ESC key still does not work.
If I close the current drawing and reopen, it fixes the ESC issue. I don't have to completly shutdown AutoCAD.

I have frequently encountered one half of this issue. (using C3d 2010, and previously in 2009).
While the ESC key has never stopped working, I will suddenly find that although I have several things selected, the properties box says no selection.
I have always assumed that this is a RAM problem ( 32bit XP pro with 3.5gb ram) (333mhz ram if that is important), especially as it most often occurs when I have other programs active. Closing and reopening the file gets the properties box recognising things again.
I have not yet encountered it with 2011

Thank you for all of the replies.
If the grips are showing it is more than just graphics.
Keep letting me know if anything else comes to mind.
Meanwhile I had a question that I kind of obscurely posted in the middle of the thread. Jon saw it.
What kind of mouse do you have? Or, are you on a laptop with a touch-pad?
I noticed yesterday I could get similar results to what you are showing when I used a scroll device other than the main wheel on my mouse.
If I opened a new drawing then the Escape key came back (no need to close the drawing that the escape key was not working in). It occurred in previous versions as well, but it is a possibility you got a new mouse or just never noticed or maybe the mouse settings you used to use were not updated in 2011 (I have clean machines so it is a little different). Really looking at it though I think my occurence was different because my commandline would report "cancel". But if you have a second, and you have saved first, try doing a pick first and cycling through the mouse buttons and what not and see if you can get the result.
I will continue with researching this. Edited by: dan908 on May 19, 2010 5:39 PM

First let me say that I am an AutoCAD tester, so I am looking for problems in AutoCAD or something in AutoCAD that might affect Map.
Working off of the two pictures I have:
The point block (from which program? I have Civil 3d and Eagle Point), and the custom line type (---- T ----).
When you pickfirst select a block and do ddedit (or double click) it will blank the properties palette and kill the qproperties. I would think if the custom linetype is a block or is not set up through text in the .lin file that double clicking would have a similar affect.
Is this what you are doing (it is not wrong I just need to know I am on the right track)? Jon seemed to be doing this at some point in his operation from the description.

Dan908,
I have not changed or updated my mouse or it's drivers in years, however I have a Microsoft Intellimouse optical - it has a button set to Esc in AutoCAD, which also stops working when Esc on the keyboard stops clearing the selection. Another button is set to equal Enter in AutoCAD, and that still works OK.
I don't think you are right about the ddedit, because I can be moving text around the screen, or copying objects, rotating lines, etc when this happens. It doesn't seem to happen because I double click, but double click stops working as a result. Likewise, it doesn't just happen with blocks. Text, lines, arcs lisp routines, addons, all cause it to happen and not just one of them.
I am using Map 2011 - and as I say, this happened the day I installed it.

I have the following:
standard scrollwheel optical mouse. I can't remember how long this particular mouse has been in use.
A1 sized GTCO Calcomp Drawingboard IV
Thise are both installed correctly, but for the last year or so (problem predates this so unlikely cause) I have been rigging up an Aiptek A4 digitising tablet as well. THAT is not properly installed, because if I install it, it stops the Calcomp tablet running. but I discovered that if I run two exe's from the drivers CD that came with it (ie as soon as I start my pc, go to those files and double click), then I can use that tablet as a mouse for the work session. It helps my tennis elbow to use the pen shaped mouse.
The dwgs I work on generally contain 2d closed polylines in large numbers.
Blocks occasionally, but not many, and also occasionally 3d polylines.
As I said, I have never seen any problem with escape, but with the larger files I can be working happily, then select a few lines to change layer, double click for the properties (or use the properties button), and the box comes up with no selection, even though any command I type will move stretch whatever. Closing the file fixes it.
Further details;
I use a mixture of the standard toolbars and a couple I customised. I have the useless ribbon banished from my workspace (doesn't even have several of the commands I use frequently.) I have Civil 3d 2011 now. Have not seen the problem yet. Will post if I do.
As far as I can remember, I first encountered this 3 or 4 years ago.
While escape has never failed to work, I do find that the delete key will stop working if I am using the Drawingboard IV (works the first time, but afterwards, I have to hit the 'e' key. - may be related.)
Could the person who programmed a mouse key to be escape possibly tell me the code ? I never could figure out that one, and I really need it on my puck. (especially now we have the nice new dynamic node editing options, because that little menu freezes the big drawingboard completely until I can hit the escape key).

Sorry for the novel. Hope it helps in some way to fix the bug.

I am using a Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 6000. Standard buttons are set to default, other two buttons are set for F8 and F10. I just updated the mouse software to the current version so we'll see if the ESC prob continues.

I a going to go with it not being the mouse problem I hit, none of you have fancy enough mouses.
I have now installed Map 2011.
Anyone have a sample drawing they want to share? I am working off of a civil 3d drawing I have lying around but it could be related to one specific object in the drawing.
The other way to go is one specific action/ chain of actions. For example editing the text of the block, then doing 10 other things before it has a problem.
PS Tony I work for Autodesk. I am just a lot more low profile than some of the other people. Someone told me to find the problem spoken of in this thread though, so I had to come out of hiding.
