Can you link autocad text to a field in an excel sheet

I would like to link a series of text lines in an autocad drawing to there corisponding fields in an excel sheet, I can not use tables in autocad becasuse of the way other software uses the text in autocad. I have attached files of the text leyout in acad and of the sheet in excel. One thing that keeps me from using tables in acad is that every line of text is on a different layer, with tables you can't control the layer of table its always on the current layer. Just letting people know why I'm where I am.

    Thanks

    Ed

    Hi Ed,

Is the content of the text coming from blocks?

Do you want that each text line in acad text.jpg is in a different layer?

Can't you use the Data Extraction tool because it will create a table with only one layer?

I don't know if I understand exactly you are looking for, please give more details.

    Cheers,

    Luciane

If you were to consider third party software, take a look at the Annotation Links in XL2CAD Pro, it lets you link random text/mtext to random Excel cells and automatically updates them when the drawing opens.

Yes, each line in the jpg file is on a different layer, the reason is software we use to program cnc routers looks at each line of text and uses the layer name to point it to where it belongs. I have the data preexisting in excel, and the text lines are not blocks, my goal would be to have the text line equal the excel data on a corrisponding table.

    Thanks for the explanation.

I am only aware of manual ways of doing this, for example, copy the cells in Excel, paste special (as AutoCAD entities), explode the table and apply the layers as desired.

Other than this, you could probably do it programatically (see the related forums) or use a third-party application if there is one that does what you need.

If you would like to have this feature in AutoCAD (an automated process), I suggest you log a wishlist item with our developers:

    Hope this helps,

This goes back to a preivious wish list item I asked for which was to be able to control what layer a table and it content were on, as it is now the tables are on the current layer. If you could control the layer of a table, I could probably make one field tables and link them with excel fields and make it work. It's strange that you can put text on any layer but tables and their content are only on the current layer.

    Thanks, Ed

    Hi Ed,

    It makes sense.

I think what happens is that a table is a single entity at the moment. Maybe it will change in the future.

Let us know if we can help any further.
