Blue Screen when opening Drawing

Every few weeks when opening a drawing, my computer restarts (just plain crashes windows and it restarts automatically). This only happens using AutoCAD, no other program has done this as of yet. I have no service packs installed and I haven't seen another post that refers to this problem. When I click on "Check for solution", nothing comes up.

Have you been running that version of autocad on your machine for long? Try installing the service packs it can't hurt. Are you running 32bit or 64 bit autocad? if you are running 32bit, do you have a 64 bit OS?

Hi,
IMHO when getting blue screen then you have a problem with the hardware or with the drivers controlling the hardware.
I would start working through the list of installed hardware and check for driver updates.
Plus: download test software doing RAM-tests, if available from your graphiccard-vendor try to get test-sw for your graphiccard-memory too.
Good luck, - alfred -

Good thoughts. Just to give you some background, I use AutoCAD for 8 hours per day, 5 days a week and this problem occures roughly once a month. I can't reproduce the error and it only occures when I have a drawing open and try opening another drawing. Typically I have several drawings open at any given time and never have a problem.... just once every blue moon.
Also, I run a 64 bit system with a 64 bit version of CAD.

Hi,
>> [...] and try opening another drawing. Typically I have several drawings open
Then just as a guess: overheat or memory.
With the memory you can change the modules in the slots and look if the error occurs faster then.

Just a quick note: Alfred said that you could change the modules in the PC, what you could also do is reseat the modules whereby you remove the modules, powere up, power off and reinstall the modules.
If its an overheating issue i would have expected the machine to crash using other apps apart form Autocad. which i think narrows the search. As Alfred said, new drivers is the place to start.

Not entirely accurate on the overheating issue. Few common programs push a computer as hard as AutoCAD does, so running something like Word, Excel, or IE won't cause the overheating/power draw that AutoCAD would.
If you are going to fly by the seat of your pants, expect friction burns.
Adopt. Adapt. Overcome. Or be overcome.

Overheating isn't the issue. I work beside a cold window and with drawings up to 130Mb of 3d modules. Today, I peaked at about 2Mb (absolute tops) with simple 2d drawings when I blue screened my computer.
I will bring all of these suggestions to our IT department.
Thanks everyone.
